also, real quick before i jump off tumblr for a little while, please remember I’m writing Peter Parker as true to 616 canon as possible. I’m currently in the process of reading through all of The Amazing Spider-Man, at issue #20 right now. But this means I do portray him as a little more of a douche than other incarnations have shown him to be. His first instinct upon receiving his powers was to cash-in on it – not to help his family, not to donate to charity, but to be rich. This, of course, leads indirectly to the death of Uncle Ben which … yeah, pushes Peter to try and become better but.
Raising yourself up to have that attitude it just … doesn’t go away as easily as you might think. It’s what makes him such a compelling character in my eyes is that he’s more ‘grounded’ than other heroes in the Marvel universe (at least the good majority I have extensive knowledge of) in that he sees the real world as it is (much like, say, Frank Castle or Matthew Murdock do) – not inherently filled with good people, not all sunshine and rainbows. He’s constantly battling with his own morals, his own financial insecurity and a slew of other things. There’s been countless time where he’s said in the early issues that he’d rather sooner let Flash Thompson or J. Jonah Jameson die because of the way they treat him as Peter Parker / Spider-Man respectively.
And, yeah, the character’s gotten less douchey over the years in the comics but … I see that less of a redaction of his character traits (like, say, for instance, how Batman no longer uses guns or kills people, which all ultimately worked out for the better) and more of a … I dunno. Failure to see what made Peter Parker so compelling in the first place, I guess?
But this is subject to change as, shockingly, I haven’t read newer stuff featuring Spidey much – if at all. As big of a Spider-Man fan as I am, that’s a bit of a shame. Currently, though, these are my thoughts. This got a little long, oops.
